Lauren Miller- Varsity Girls Volleyball Coach
Coaching Experience:
I have been coaching or playing volleyball all my life. Most recently, I have coached the Army War College volleyball team with the season culminating in a competition against the other military service War Colleges. I also coached at the middle school level for Carlisle Area School District with a combined team for both of their middle schools. I started coaching high school and middle school-aged athletes while I was an undergrad student at Davidson College in North Carolina.
Playing Experience:
After a championship my senior year in high school and playing travel ball, as well, I went on to play at the Division I level – winning our conference and playing against the nation’s best (to include humbling losses against Nebraska and Hawaii) in the NCAA championship tournament my junior and senior years. Throughout my military career, I earned a spot on the Army’s select team and had the chance to play for the United States' All-Armed Forces team and compete internationally in the Olympic-style Military World Games in India and Italy against other nations’ military teams to include against China, North Korea, Greece, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, and others.
Favorite Coaching Memory: 28-26 final set victories, sweet come-from-behind wins after starting out 0-2 in set count, and of course the mental growth/tenacity gained from a loss that fuels the fire to drive a revenge win later that same season.
Coaching Philosophy:
Not only am I passionate about coaching volleyball, I have spent my career developing young leaders. I am passionate about coaching individuals to reach their full potential, and most importantly, to be part of strong, cohesive, successful teams. My goal is for athletes to take the lessons they learn in adversity on the court with them off the court in order to have the confidence to solve tough problems, tackle insurmountable challenges, seek continual self-improvement, and attain meaningful personal and professional goals throughout their lives.
Why do you coach at Gettysburg?:
I have had a lifelong dream of returning to Gettysburg to serve the community in this way. Team sports were the most formidable part of my youth – especially my high school years. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to give back to this great place. As a parent of four young athletes myself, I understand the important role coaches play in our children’s lives. I will aim every day to emulate the talented coaches I had the privilege to play for. While building self-confidence and resilience, they pushed me to try harder and dig deeper at every practice and game, and play for my teammates above myself. It is my goal to do the same at GHS.
