Meet the Coach: Gettysburg Boys Basketball
Coach: Marc Mclean
Coaching Experience: This is my 12th year coaching basketball and going into my 6th year of coaching basketball at Gettysburg High School.
Coaching Philosophy: First and foremost, I believe that basketball is a wonderful game, but ultimately we are trying to develop responsible young men who care about their teammates and make lasting friendships and memories. Our staff emphasizes the importance of being a student-athlete and places academics as the top priority. I tell the players, the most proud I am of them is not what is done on the court, but rather when they graduate and have a plan for the future. When it comes to the game of basketball, fundamentals are huge, and learning how to play the game from a holistic aspect where they see all the moving parts (offense, defense, transition, rebounding, communication, finishing, execution, etc…) and how each of those done well or poorly can determine the outcome. Even years where we may not be the most skilled, I find teams with the best effort, attitude, and teamwork can still experience a rewarding season. Ultimately we want to win games and earn a spot in districts, however I feel seeing growth and progress should also be measured. Basketball should be fun, but competing with the intent to win should be the fun part of the process. Overall, I feel like coaching basketball is also indirectly and directly teaching life lessons that I hope resonate with these guys for years to come.
Why do you coach at Gettysburg: I love the Gettysburg community and I think it is the greatest small town in America. I have been living here for the last 27 years, my kids both went through the Gettysburg school district (last one is a senior now), and each had a wonderful experience. I just want to help make a positive impact in the community and play a part in creating respectful young men.
