The Gettysburg Warriors opened their fifth campaign as a varsity squad in sub-freezing temperatures with the hopes of making a statement against the visiting squad from Muhlenburg. The fans in the stands were treated to a “St. Patty’s Day Special” as their hometown Warriors completed an epic comeback to secure their first ever win at Warrior Stadium. Down by three goals twice in the contest, the Warriors showed the heart as they clawed back to beat the Muhlenburg Mules by the score of 8 - 7.
Junior Turner Ramsburg was an anchor between the pipes as he stopped 14 of 21 shots on the night. Ramsburg was perfect second half as he held Muhlenburg scoreless for 24 straight minutes. Freshman Croix Coscia kept the Warriors in the game early with two tallies while Senior Ty Garretson scored two critical goals in the second half. Ethan Cortina, defenseman Sam Dickerson, and attackman Gavin Nevada each scored a goal to keep their team within striking distance. With four minutes remaining in the game, Freshman Tyler Saynuk scored the game winner. Saynuk navigated through traffic and found the back of the net to put the Warriors ahead for good. Grant Johnson was credited with two assists in the game while Gavin Nevada picked up a helper as well.
The Warriors outbattled the Mules in the groundball department as they recorded six more than their opponents on the night. Leading the way for the Warriors in groundballs was Grant Johnson with 8. Ty Garretson put in some heavy work as he picked up 5 and Sam Dickerson vacuumed up 4. Sam Dickerson hit a milestone in his career as he recorded his 100th groundball.
Defensively, Nate Rawlings, Sam Dickerson, Christian DiCampli, Cain Sieg, and Colton “Big Country” Hewitt were forces to be reckoned with. As a team, the Warriors forced 18 turnovers to Muhlenburg’s 8. Rawlings managed to force 6 turnovers while Garretson caused 3 turnovers. DiCampli and Johnson each were credited with 2 forced turnovers in the game. Freshman Cain Sieg had 2 groundballs while forcing a turnover.
Senior Jake Bernier made his debut on the lacrosse field with an impressive outing. Bernier put two shots on goal, scooped up 2 groundballs, and forced a turnover.
Alexis Valdez led the team with 5 faceoff wins on the night while Logan Wyant won a faceoff in the critical moments of the game.
The Warriors are on the road this Thursday as they take on Warwick. Faceoff is at 4:15 PM.
